South Carolina State University selects Greater Columbia Chapter as Chapter of the Year!
"Chapters of the Year" were honored at the May 9, 2010 banquet for their continued support to SC State University. The University recognized three chapters -one in each of the following Tiers: Tier I (50 members or less), Tier II (51-100 members), and Tier III (101 or more members). Greater Columbia is a Tier III Chapter. Points were awarded in the following categories and reviewed by a panel of judges to determine the honorees: (1) Contributions made directly to the University from July 1, 2009 to May 1, 2010; (2) Number of students recruited and enrolled for the 2009-2010 school year; (3) Number of scholarships awarded for the 2009-2010 school year; (4) Chapter Activity- Local/state/national recognition received as a chapter and local events that are used to recruit students, engage alumni, or raise scholarship dollars for the University. Each chapter was required to complete and submit the University's information request form in its entirety by Friday, April 30, 2010 for consideration.
THE NUMBERS
The Greater Columbia Chapter operates on a lean annual budget, averaging approximately $35,000.00. For FY2010, to date, the Chapter had receipts of $39,593.00 and $38,905.00 of expenditures.
This budget combined with the comprehensive list of activities, honors, awards, and so forth represent the Chapter's clear commitment to increase support and raise funds to specifically enforce and support the mission of South Carolina State University. In FY2010, Greater Columbia had 115 members; recruited 70 students; awarded 10 academic, need-based and textbook scholarships; planned 27 major initiatives; and Chapter/members received 9 national/state/local honors and awards.
Now, consider individual gifts that went beyond these operating dollars above. In FY2010, one-hundred percent (100%) of the members of the Chapter contributed more than $27,935.00 directly to South Carolina State University. This amount DOES NOT include bookstore purchases, sports tickets, STATE Club memberships, parking passes, or the likes. Importantly, it must be noted that Member Carolyn H. Brown, who passed in 2009, was posthumously recognized for her total giving to SCSU of more than $100,000. Carolyn was also Miss SCSU 1954.
This President is most appreciative and respectful of members and their willingness to selflessly give to Dear Alma Mater, for on a daily basis each of us can identify her impact in our Communities and the World. So, we give because we, too, aspire for the Greater Good. Thank you, Greater Columbia!
